A Doxipoo is a charming cross between a Dachshund and a Poodle—often combining the best of both breeds into one quirky, intelligent, and affectionate little dog. Their appearance can vary quite a bit depending on which parent they take after more, but you can usually expect a small-to-medium sized pup with a soft, often curly or wavy coat, and a big personality.

Personality

Doxipoos are clever, loving, and full of character. They’re known for their loyalty and often form strong bonds with their people. They usually have a cheeky, playful side, inherited from the Dachshund, and the intelligence and eagerness to please from the Poodle. This makes them both entertaining and trainable—though they can also have a stubborn streak!

They tend to be affectionate and social, and with proper socialisation, they get along well with other dogs and people. Some may be a little cautious or vocal with strangers, a trait inherited from the watchful Dachshund.

Doxipoo coats can vary depending on which parent they take after. Their fur may be:

  • Curly or wavy (like a Poodle): Low to non-shedding, great for allergy-sensitive homes, but requires regular brushing (at least 2–3 times a week) to prevent tangles and matting. Professional grooming every 6–8 weeks is ideal to keep their coat manageable and tidy.

  • Soft and straight or wiry (like a Dachshund): May shed lightly and need weekly brushing, with occasional tidy-ups.

Regular grooming not only keeps their coat healthy but also helps prevent skin issues and keeps them feeling comfortable. Ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental care are also important parts of the routine.

We recommend a couple of different brushes, a slicker, pin brush and a metal comb (shown in the photo) to make sure you do the best coat brushing, right down to the skin at home to save your Doxipoo having to be shaved down at a groomer if they get matted.

Exercise Requirements

Doxipoos have moderate energy levels. They enjoy short walks, games, and active play but are also very content to snuggle on the couch. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise for this clever breed—puzzle toys, training games, and learning tricks help keep them happy and balanced.

Ideal Family Match

Doxipoos are adaptable and well-suited to a variety of homes:

  • Families with children, singles, or retirees.

  • Homes where someone is often around—they thrive on companionship and don’t love being left alone for long periods.

  • People looking for an affectionate, smart, and fun-sized companion who enjoys playtime just as much as cuddle time.
